September 13 - Judi Simon - Porcelain Painting

We were impressed with Judi Simon's porcelain painting during a Show and Tell last spring. We've asked her to show us more, and on September 13 she will. She plans to present a brief history of porcelain painting and it's origins, show us the latest adaptations of the art, and explain the process and the supplies needed. Then she will give a painting demonstration. Anyone who wants to try can join in, applying the paint to some tiles and blank pieces. This sounds like fun. Come 1:30 for refreshments and conversation. The meeting begins at 2, and the program shortly thereafter. We will meet at the Central Presbyterian Church, 9191 Woodway Drive. Bring friends and some of your art to share.

Judi is a professional illustrator and medical artist whose career spans over 40 years in the commercial art, health education and medical fields. She has had numerous illustrations printed in newspapers, magazines, books, and displays as well as illustrations for audio visual presentations for medical students and other professional organizations. Through the years she has won numerous advertising awards for her graphic design and packaging concepts for a variety of consumer products.

Her background and education are in the commercial art field but she has had sculptural pieces displayed in galleries and art fairs around the Detroit, Michigan area. Her main hobby, however, has always been painting. She began porcelain painting over seven years ago and now paints primarily in this medium. She specializes in portraits and does commission pieces for clients around Texas. She won "Best in Show" and a special Judges Award at the 2015 Central Texas Ceramic Show and won third place in the professional division at the 2015 Cleburne People's Choice Art Exhibition.

She holds a Bachelor of Science of Design from the University of Michigan with a major in Advertising Design and has a minor in illustration and figure drawing. She also holds a Master of Science from Baylor University with a major in Land Planning and Urban Design. She is a member of the State Federation Porcelain Art Clubs of Texas as well as a qualified instructor with the China Painting Teachers of Texas. She is also a member of the International Porcelain Artists and Teachers and is working toward a master teacher certification with this international group.

A few samples of her porcelain art are shown here. Come on September 13 to see more.
