This School Year - Waco Charter School Art
Lessons, Awards
The Art Guild executive board decided
to limit the Letzler Art Awards to the Waco Charter School this year,
since we were not very successful in involving many schools last year.
We will vote on the winners at one of our meetings, then award ribbons
and cash to the winners during the school day.
The Principal, Bonnie McRae, would very much like to have
us provide some art lessons for the students after the regular school
day. We had six volunteers at the September meeting. We need at least
two more in order to be able to have four groups of two members, each of
which would only need to provide one lesson a month - at this point,
only about six times during the year. Please be a part of this artistic
outreach. We will begin with lessons from 4:15 to 5 p.m. on either
Wednesday or Thursday, at the convenience of the team members. Depending
upon the response, we might want to adjust the time. The school can
provide materials, but can't afford to hire an art teacher. We are an
organization committed to promoting art; now is the time to do it.
November 11 - Art Guild Exhibit at MCC
We will hang the MCC exhibit on Thursday, November 11.
Please bring up to three paintings to the Ball Performing Arts Center
between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. There is no theme, but paintings must be at
least 16" x 20" including frame. If you cannot bring them at that time,
please get someone to bring them for you. The exhibit will be removed
about December 8 or 10, depending upon the performance schedule. Again, either pick up your works or arrange for someone to
get them for you.
While the exhibit is up, come out to enjoy a
performance and see the exhibit at night when it shows up best. The
following performances are currently scheduled, all at 7:30,
all free,
except The Lion in Winter, which is $8-$12. Check

for details.

November 11-December 8 - Art Guild Exhibit at MCC
We have 25 entries from ten artists on exhibit at the
Ball Performing Arts Center at MCC. As usual, it's worth seeing, with a
good mix of oldtimers and newcomers. A virtual tour is below, but it's
much better in person. Drop by when you are in the area, or better
still, come to enjoy a
performance and see the exhibit at night when it shows up best. The
exhibit will be taken down on Thursday, December 8, between 2:30 and
3:30. Exhibitors need to pick up their art during that time or get
someone to do it for them.

November 14 - Ingrid Erickson - Cut Paper on
Panel
 Ingrid
will demonstrate how she works with cut paper on panel. Her work is
influenced by textiles, printmaking, and Asian screens and scrolls as
well as two years of living in Asia. She plans to have everyone create a
small piece to take home. We will also be electing 2011 officers. We will meet at our usual time and place, 1:30
for conversation and refreshments, meeting and demo at 2:00, Waco
Charter School, 615 N 25th street. Bring a work or two for Show and
Tell. And bring friends. First time visitors are free, or they can join
for the rest of 2010 for only $4. Regular Membership for 2011 is only
$15 for those with email, if paid before Jan 1. Students younger
than 21 are only $5, and college art majors are free! Add $10 to have a
web gallery of your works. Add $5 if you have no email.
November 14 - Ingrid Erickson - Cut Paper Art
 Ingrid
Erickson teaches pottery classes at MCC and gives private lessons to 40
students in Waco, Killeen, and Temple. Her own art is informed by her
training in art history and studio art, as well as her extensive travel
in China and Thailand, where she taught English. The photo at the right
shows her in Thailand. She works with cut paper, an art form that is
practiced in many countries. She distributed a flyer depicting some of
the history and traditions involving cut paper. She focuses on the
plants, flowers, and birds of Texas and the Gulf Coast in her art.
Ingrid
glues her cut pieces with matte Modge Podge onto a panel, often a long
vertical rectangle. She collects papers of various types and textures
and often makes her own. She uses many sizes of scissors to suit
different tasks and paper thicknesses, as well as Exacto knives and
self-healing cutting boards when "inside" cuts are needed. To apply a
cut shape to the background board, she soaks the cut shape in Modge
Podge and glues it down. The three types of cut paper work that she
demonstrated are as follows:
1. Additive - a cut out shape is glued onto the panel
2. Subtractive - after a drawing is made, the negative spaces are cut
out with an Exacto knife and the finished shape is glued onto a
contrasting background. See photo above right.
3. Line of symmetry - the paper is folded and the drawing is made on one
side of the fold and cut out. When the fold is opened, the sides are
symmetrical.
 Paper,
card stock, scissors, glue sticks, Exacto knives and cutting boards were
available for us to use one or more of her techniques to create a
greeting card. The photo at the left shows us at work. That at the right
shows the results of our efforts.
We thank Ingrid for giving us an engaging tale of her
artistic journey and a welcome opportunity to create art during a
meeting. We also thank Myrl Luper, Bobbee Watts, Karen Groman, and Kathe
Tipton for bringing refreshments, and all those who brought art for Show
and Tell, shown below. A charming drawing of kittens by Frank Letzler
took 1st place in the vote, posthumously. Nancy Cagle brought it to show
us how nice it looked after framing, not intending that it be in the
contest, but we didn't know that. Deannie Chastain was 2nd and Christine
Niekamp, 3rd.
